Paper & Ink Hobbies, But Not Scrapbooking
1. Water Marbling
The word for this Japanese art of water marbling sounds so complicated – Suminagashi. Yet, the calming process of letting tiny drops of colored ink play their magic on water so you can catch it on paper after that is actually really simple.
The most attractive part about this is that you will never get the same design twice. Everything you create will be unique – a once in a lifetime masterpiece you only took part in creating. Relaxing, entertaining and truly a cozy hobby.

2. Wax Seals
Melt and stamp a letter you handwrote. Who did you write to? It doesn’t matter. What matters is the creation of the seal itself, watching the wax melt, maybe combing a few colors together to see what you end up with.
Watching wax melt is an almost meditative experience that asks for nothing but your quiet presence. And about the letters…
3. Penpalling
Writing a letter to a stranger across the world, exchanging random thoughts and ideas, getting a letter from them with the same.
The good old snail mail communication isn’t something from the past. It still exists and there is a good sized community online that you can join to find your first penpal. There are multiple Facebook groups if you’re looking for a penpal interested in a similar hobby to yours. Alternatively, if penpalling is the hobby, you can register on Penpalworld or Globalpenfriends to find your writing buddy.
4. Postcorssing
Send a postcard to someone in Mexico, receive a postcard from someone in Europe. Or vice versa.
Postcrossing is an awesome hobby where you exchange postcards with people around the world. You can register for postcrossing on this site and become a part of a community where sharing quirky, funny or just beautiful postcards with others becomes a cozy hobby that requires very little but gives you and others a smile.

Keeping an Unusual Diary
5. A Stranger Diary
I will never forget seeing a young woman dancing in the car behind mine. It was a hot summer day, we were all stuck in traffic. Then I glanced in the rear view mirror and saw the woman in the car behind me dancing and singing with such contagious energy that I didn’t have a choice but to smile. I thought, if we all behaved like that in traffic there would never be any road rage. Ever.
We all expect to write about people we know, but what if we don’t know them? What if we saw a stranger reading a newspaper on the bus? A mother collecting leaves with her child in the park? Or the woman walking her dog every morning, but always taking her time, while I still try to rush my poor Bella through her sniffing journey? Anyone we don’t know can become the center of a journal entry. It would be such a beautiful collection of stories about strangers we never met.
6. A Moon Diary
A Moon Diary (or Lunar Diary) is a simple journal where you write your emotions and thoughts in sync with the moon phases. For example, New Moon is for planning and new beginnings, First Quarter is saved for building momentum and preparing for action, Full Moon is for celebrating achievements and so on. You can see all phases and how to journal in sync with the Moon. If you wish to dig deeper into this relaxing hobby, see these journaling prompts here.
7. A Sound Diary
Record a few seconds of your day a few times, every day. Putting them together would create a minute or two long audio clip representing the sounds of your day. Think of it as a soundtrack to your life, one day at a time. It is a beautiful way to keep track of how your life sounds at this particular stage of life. Would it be a quiet breathing-style soundtrack? Would it be a messy children’s laughter soundtrack?
Turn it into a video project if you wish (but that would remind me too much of a social media vlog, the choice is yours).

Collect Something Nobody Around You Collects
Options are nearly endless with this one, but since we are talking about something cozy and relaxing, here are my suggestions:
8. Bookplates
Bookplates are the decorative pieces placed in books to show ownership (think of old ex libris or “property of a Sir” in the 1800s).
They are usually made of high quality cotton paper, rice paper or gummed (water-activated) paper. There is a big online community here, but you don’t have to join it. If you love bookish stuff and this hobby sounds attractive you can start it as an experiment and see if it resonates with you.
9. Stamps
Hardly a surprise to you, but if general stamps aren’t your thing, you could also collect specific image stamps such as flower stamps, stamps from a specific region, or stamps with a specific person featured on them.
10. Postcards
I actually have just over 100 handwritten old postcards tucked in my drawer. I got them very cheap many years ago at a yard sale, and I remember reading quite a few of them afterward. It was like peeking through a window into another time and hearing about people’s everyday lives and thoughts.

Mend and Repair as a Cozy Hobby
11. Sashiko Mending
This is an old Japanese hand-stitching technique where you repair and mend fabric with visible and beautiful stitches. While most repairs nowadays are hidden, here you get to show them off in the most beautiful way. You can use different stitching techniques, fabric patches and more to mend in whatever way looks best to you. This is a quiet and mindful hobby you can practice for a long time.
12. Kintsugi on Plates
Since we are exploring old Japanese mending techniques, I need to remind you of this one as well. Kintsugi is putting broken pottery back together with gold. And while you might not want to use actual gold to do this, there are plenty of cheaper options that give you results just as beautiful. You could source your pottery from thrift stores, break it yourself and spend a week putting it back together.
13. Vintage Book Repairs
As a vintage book reseller I have always been fascinated by the art of book repair. I think I am too scared to try and put a vintage book back together properly. It requires time, dedication, a delicate touch and a lot of patience. If these are qualities you wish to practice, this might just be the perfect cozy hobby to try.
Cozy Crafts and Arts
14. Creating Miniature Rooms
This is such a cozy and immersive hobby with a big community online and plenty of free quidance on how to start building a miniature room. If I were to start this hobby, I would probably create a library first, then a Drawing Room from a Victorian manor and so on. The options are endless and the only limit is your imagination. Pinterest is also filled with ideas to keep you inspired.
15. Origami but a Thousand Times
This isn’t about learning origami. It is about learning how to fold one figure and then repeat the action 1000 times. Why? Because it teaches you how repetition works: first you do it carefully, then you become confident and in the end it feels just as easy as breathing. It is a fascinating journey and requires very little time.
16. Solving Unusual Puzzles
When I say puzzles, you probably think of a 1000 piece Jigsaw, but I know you already thought of those. So, I take you a step further and give you a list of unusual puzzles you can solve as a part of a relaxing evening routine:
- A flower vase you build with puzzle pieces;
- Wooden model kit puzzles like this Magic Cello or this absolutely stunning typewriter;
- Escape Room puzzle box like this one that requires logic and patience to solve it;
Final Thoughts
I hope you found your perfect cozy hobby, one that would help you relax and lose yourself in it. If not yet, look for the hobby that doesn’t come with too many questions with it. You don’t want another stress point in your life, you want something that asks for very little from you but gives you a lot in return. Which one are you starting tonight?
