Think of your home office room as a blank canvas. Before you start positioning furniture and decoration items, it’s important to understand their placement. 

South area 

This area should promote fame and reputation. The element of this area is fire, so you can incorporate the color red and/or items that represent that element. Avoid using blue (the color of the element water) as it might interfere with the area. The water element puts down the fire energy.

North area 

This area relates to your career, objectives, goals, and accomplishments. It’s represented by the water area so you might want to place items that refer to water. You can also place some inspiring images, quotes, or even a mood board in that area.

South-east area

This area represents abundance and prosperity. Here you can place items that speak to you of money. For example, a money frog (more details at the end of the article). Avoid fire images and the color red, as the element of this area, is wood.

Desk Position

The position of your desk is the most important when it comes to setting up your home office. It symbolizes your career and it also has a strong influence on it. That’s why you should position your desk in a commanding position. 

If you’re still new to feng shui chances are that you’re not familiar with the concept of the commanding position. But if there’s one thing you should know about feng shui it should be how to determine the commanding position.

What’s a commanding position?

The commanding position governs how you position yourself in life. The desk represents your career. Therefore, it should be in the commanding position of your home office. Not your sofa. Not your home office coffee table. Your desk!

The commanding position is where you want to spend most of your time. But how do you determine where’s the commanding position? Let’s find out.

Placement of the commanding position

Place your desk so that you can see the door when you’re sitting. Keep in mind that at the same time you should not be directly in line with the door. This will contribute to feeling less stressed and it will give your subconsciousness a sense of ease. It will give more space for creativity, ideas, and opportunities. 

I know that this might appear a bit too specific. So, if you don’t have the chance to put your desk where the door is visible, you can place a mirror so that you see a reflection of the door.

Here’s another tip – if you have no choice but to place the desk in line with the door, you might want to put something in between. This will decrease the energy coming in.

Things to avoid

Don’t place your desk so that you’re staring at a corner of the room. This can lead to a lack of support and control. It might also have a negative impact on creativity and imagination. 

Also, try to avoid facing a wall in general as it can create blocks that prevent career growth. Consider the view. If you can’t position your desk so that you see the door you can place mirrors. Ideally, you want to be looking at something that inspires you.

Additionally, while it seems like a good idea to be facing a window this might cause the energy to float away from the room. It’s best to have the window at your side instead.

Money Corner

Your career should directly resonate with wealth. And you can increase that energy if you follow the feng shui philosophy. So how do you find out where your money corner is?

Well, the money corner of a space is determined with the use of Bagua. 

Bagua

Essentially Bagua is an energy map, divided into a grid that with 8 corners around the center. Each corner represents a particular aspect of your life. For example, you have the “love corner” or the “creativity corner”. Here’s an image of Bagua to visualize it.

Now you want to focus on your money corner. Keep in mind that the career corner is a different thing. You still incorporate your money corner into the career area of your home. But now we want to focus on and attract wealth.

Finding your money corner

To find the wealth area of your home office is easy. Just stand at the door of the room facing in. The far-left area is the wealth corner of the room.  

Now that you’ve located your money corner it’s time to pay special attention to it. If it’s cluttered – organize it. If it’s empty – fill it with items that represent wealth (like a money frog). A great idea is to decorate it with purple. It could be a piece of artwork, a pillow, or just anything that speaks to you.

Activate your money corner

There are two ways to activate your money corner. 

First, you might incorporate some plants. The element of wood is associated with money and wealth. That’s why you might want to consider putting a jade plant or a coin plant in your money corner. 

Second, you can incorporate a water element in your money corner in order to activate it. Water supports wood and brings positive energy to your corner. Image or artwork of waterfall should do the job. You can also go the extra mile and put in a fish tank. But make sure to keep it clean. Dirty water blocks the floating energy.

Choose the right colors

Traditionally there are five colors that represent prosperity in the feng shui philosophy. 

• For fame and recognition choose red and purple. Those are the colors of the fire element that rules over the south.
• For health and wealth choose green. This color is associated with the wood element and it’s best to incorporate it in the southeast part of the room.
• Black and blue are the colors of career. They’re ruled by the water element and you should settle it in the north sector.

With the correct use of colors, you can attract and enhance prosperity and luck. So if you’re a beginner in feng shui, you should explore the different values and energy that each one could bring.

Add a water feature

If you want to excel in your career you might want to consider placing a water feature in your home office. For example a water fountain. Keep in mind that you have to put it in the correct location. You’re more likely to attract wealth and money if you place it in the southeast part of the room.

Add plants

Plants embody energy and life. They introduce freshness and vitality into your home office. In order to activate prosperity, you can place a lucky bamboo plant in either the east or northeast part of your office. Palm trees are also known to attract and activate positive energy. In any case, plants are not only a beautiful decoration but also a powerful energy magnet.

Add incense

If you want to keep a happy balance in your home office space you should add incense to your list of feng shui essentials. Burning palo santo can reduce stress levels. Common sage cleanses the energy of the room. There are countless incense sticks you can choose from in your local herb spot. Also, simply lighting candles might do the job. 

Add a money frog

The money frog is a symbol that the Chinese believe will bring wealth, prosperity, long life, and good luck. It’s a small figure of a frog usually made out of gold or metal. Logically, you can put a money frog in your money corner but remember to not place it directly on the floor. It’s also recommended to settle your money frog facing inward from the door. This way you’ll direct the energy to come in, not out.
