How To Make Life More Interesting When You’re Bored

Life… we can’t really escape it, right? We have to go through it and do that to the best of our abilities. We must evolve and get better at being kind, successful, organized, being good to others, being positive, happy… But should we be bored while doing it?

Of course, not!

Living the same day multiple times is fun only in romantic comedies. Yet, some of us have the same mundane routine for months in a row and often get tired and exhausted just because nothing spices up our lives.

Making life more interesting has been a challenge in the last year or two (can you guess why). Well. I lied! It was interesting, but not in a positive way, and that really (really) doesn’t sound fun and exciting.

But how to make life more interesting (in a less anxious way)“, you ask!

Now, more than ever before, we need to find our unique ways to craft a fulfilling and exciting lifestyle – however we can, wherever we are.

And you know what? The ideas are just pouring lately, so I will share 30 of them with you. I would love to hear your unique ways to make your life more interesting and exciting in exchange.

30 Ways To Have More Fun In Life

how to make life interesting

1. Enroll in a cooking class

There are plenty of options to choose from online, and I am sure it’s not hard to find a physical class in your area as well. Courses vary in difficulty and cuisine, so take your pick – whether it be baking, salads, or cooking meat, you are bound to have a lot of fun and learn invaluable tips along the way.

Alternatively, if taking classes and courses is still something that can’t happen in person, maybe that could be the best reason to have Gordon Ramsay teach you a thing or two about food. I am not joking! Check his class here.

2. Plan a road trip

Most of the time, people focus more on planning great trips around the globe, and we forget that there are equally good opportunities just around the corner.

Take the time to do some research and pick something that sparks your interest. You will be surprised by all the local events you’ll discover in your vicinity.

3. Take yourself on a date night

Who says it takes two to date night? Taking yourself out and spending a fabulous night on your own is a great way to reconnect with yourself and have fun while you do it.

Even if you have a partner, there are probably some things they don’t want to do with you – so be brave and simply do them alone. Here are some fresh solo date ideas to try?

4. Stop watching TV

Watching TV takes up a lot of our time, which can be better used elsewhere. Instead of passively switching through channels or binging the new Netflix show, dare challenge yourself and discover entertainment elsewhere.

Be it the local part, theatre, or reconnecting with an old friend, the options are limitless.

5. Note down one exciting thing for today

At the end of each day, take some time to ponder – What was the most exciting thing that happened to me today?

Sometimes it might be challenging to come up with something, but this exercise holds its value. It teaches us to enjoy the little things and appreciate the wonder of life even at its most mundane. Besides, by doing this every day, you might soon realize that your life is more interesting than you thought.

6. Dust off Duolingo

No matter what language you want to learn – French, Italian, or even Esperanto, you need to be consistent to succeed.

So download Duolingo or any other language app you prefer and stick to using it daily. In time, you will be surprised at how much you start to pick up by just playing in the app for 10-15 minutes per day.

7. Pick up a new sport activity

Is there something you always wanted to try out – like tennis, boxing, or horseback riding? If you are anything like most people, there is some sport that you’ve always been curious about. Now is the time to finally get out of your comfort zone and give it a try, whatever it is.

8. Repurpose something you have

Giving life back to old objects or furniture is an art form on its own.

Think about some of the old items you have, which you don’t use anymore – how can they turn into something useful? If you lack ideas, you can always turn to Pinterest or Google for help.

9. Thrift a whole outfit

If you haven’t thrifted before, brace yourself – it’s one of the most fun activities you can indulge in. Grab your partner or best friend and head to the nearest thrift store. Challenge each other to thrift a whole outfit for yourself or, better yet – for each other. It’s trendy, and it’s environment-friendly.

10. Take a walk and smell the flowers

When was the last time you smelled the flowers – and I mean this quite literally? Take a walk around the block and sniff the nearest rose bush (when no one is looking). Bonus points if the street is crowded. If the season doesn’t invite blooming flowers, pick up a bouquet for yourself from the grocery store instead and give it a special spot near your kitchen window.

11. Hang out with children

Children have that endless bright energy that never stops amazing us. If you have younger cousins, nephews, or even your children, take some time to spend an afternoon with them. Play. Draw. Run. Laugh.

Children have a very different perception of the world from our own, so their company often serves as a breath of fresh air. They will tell of their dreams, describe their worlds, and make you giggle and feel lighter than ever before.

12. Volunteer

There is no better way to make your life more interesting and meaningful than to give back to the community. Do some research about which local groups do good in your area. Consider how you can help them, as well as how much time you are willing to give them. Then simply reach out and offer your service.

13. Spend a whole afternoon in the library

Here’s a secret!

Libraries are the hidden treasuries of our time – you never know what you’ll discover there. It’s okay not to have a pre-made list of titles you are searching for.

Simply get lost between the shelves and browse until you find something you probably didn’t even think of in the first place. I know I could do that for hours and still not get tired.

14. Watch a movie – by yourself

If you have a partner, chances are they don’t like all the things you want – and this includes movies as well. So hop in the car, drive to the nearest cinema and watch House of Gucci in the company of a big bucket of popcorn and coke. Trust me; you will have a blast.

15. Find a new hobby

Have you ever tried knitting, painting, or playing the ukulele? You never know what you’re going to strike gold with, so test out activities until you find one or two that speak to your soul. In fact, by learning a new skill or mastering a hobby, you will get that instant feeling that your life is interesting and exciting. So, what’s your next thing on the list then?

16. Eat something new

There is probably a cuisine that looks so distant and weird to you that you never gave it a shot. Maybe you don’t like spicy food, or you’re not a fan of exotic cooking, but you should give it a chance. I always thought I didn’t like spicy food until I tried Indian for the first time.

17. People watch and take notes

Gear up with a notebook and a pen and head to the nearest park bench or cafe table. Observe the life that happens in front of your eyes and take small notes about people’s behaviors or conversations you can’t help to overhear. If you do this, you are bound to fall in love with the small intricate details of the world.

18. Get to doing that project you always put off

There probably is at least one thing you have been putting off for a while. Be it finishing that course or that book or deep cleaning your apartment, take this as a sign to get it all done.

19. Take a photo walk through town

Even if you don’t have a professional camera, take a photo tour through town and capture anything that catches your eye, even if you have to use your phone. At the end of the day, take a look through the pictures – what story do they tell when stitched together?

20. Visit a free tour

Most big cities offer a free city tour led by trusted local guides. If you have the chance, seek one of those out and take the opportunity to learn more about your city. There are probably facts and trivia that you didn’t know, which may surprise you.

21. Go to the museum

Research what is currently going on in the museum scene at the place you live in. Are there any interesting temporary exhibitions you might visit? If you see something you like, don’t waste time and visit it asap. If it’s a temporary exhibition, you don’t have much time to ponder anyway.

22. Do something that scares you

Stepping outside of our comfort zone can sometimes be scary but is almost always a thrilling experience. Make a list of things you’re afraid to do, but you’d still like to try one day. Pick the one that requires the least amount of preparation and plan to do it this weekend.

23. Visit your grandma

When was the last time you visited your grandma? Plan a trip to her place to surprise her – she will likely be delighted and prepare a feast in your honor. Indulge in some quality time and meaningful conversations with her, as there is much you can learn from her wisdom.

24. Redesign your living space

Even if it’s just moving furniture around and not doing any major renovations, you can always freshen up your living space a bit. What are the new interior design trends, and how can you best incorporate them into your space?

25. Cut your hair

Have you ever dreamt of a bold haircut you never dared to go through with? This is your sign to do it finally – you only live once, so be brave to have the hair of your dreams. Even if you aren’t fully satisfied, it will grow back at some point.

26. Test-drive a fast car

Who hasn’t dreamt of driving a sports car? Book a test drive and enjoy the vehicle to the best of your abilities. In fact, book one test-drive every month. This makes life way more interesting, and you will always have something to look forward to.

27. Adopt a pet

Consider adopting a pet, but only if you feel ready for this step. Pets can spice your whole life up and present you with new responsibilities as well as loving company. Consider adopting an elderly pet, as those are hard to find owners for.

28. Perform random acts of kindness

When was the last time you did something good for someone on a whim? Pay for someone’s coffee, buy balloons for a child or help the elderly cross the road. You never know how what an impact your action might have on someone else. See our huge list of acts of kindness here.

29. Organize a spa day

Stock up on face masks, nail polish, body scrub, and anything else that has the power to make you feel like a pampered princess. Clear your schedule for the day and indulge in some relaxing activities in the company of a bottle of wine. Need more self-care ideas? Recently I created a detailed self-care day schedule depending on the type of self-care you need (8 different types of self-care, to be exact).

30. Shake up your morning routine

Escape boredom by introducing new things into your morning routine now and then. Try waking up a bit earlier to greet the sunrise or read a couple of pages from your book together with your morning coffee.

Final Thoughts
