We all know at least a hundred ways to entertain ourselves in the evenings if we have the cash. But finding affordable (even better, free) things to do at night when bored is on a completely different level.
Of course, the dear old social media apps blink at us from the phone’s screen, but is that the best option we have?
No!
I’ve collected a comprehensive list of 50 fun night-time activities when you are bored and short on cash but also wouldn’t want to waste the evening scrolling mindlessly on social media.
Getting straight to the point, you want to find out what you are “in the mood for”. Therefore, I’ve separated the ideas into five categories. Let’s dive straight in!

Things To Do When You Are Bored In The Evenings
Productive Things To Do At Home At Night
1. Backup your digital data or transfer photos and files to a portable hard drive.
2. Plan your week or the next week if it’s already Friday or the weekend.
3. Learn a new skill online (there are plenty of free videos on YouTube, or you could visit Skillshare to level up).
4. Write in your journal – there are fun things you can write about, and here are 50 of these ideas.
5. Search for new recipes to try. Nobody says “cook”, but searching for recipes to add to your weekly meal plan is always welcome later. I get so bored of spinning the same five meals every week that I had that search session last Monday evening.
6. Update your resume. Regardless of your career situation, updating your resume regularly is a must—it saves you time when you decide to search for another and gives you perspective and clarity on your achievements.
7. Read non-fiction books. Self-education is a higher form of self-discipline and probably one of the most productive things you can do in the evenings.
8. Budget planning. Staying on top of your finances is “adulting,” even if you don’t consider it “fun”.
9. Organize your emails.
10. Make a list of gift ideas for your loved ones. This will come in handy when their birthdays approach or during the holiday season at the end of the year.

Fun Stuff To Do At Home At Night
1. Have a movie night and go all out with popcorn, drinks, cozy blankets, pillows, and a phone in ‘silence’ mode so nobody ruins the moment.
2. Play board games or card games – you can do both solo or with your housemates.
3. Have a karaoke night with all of your favorite music from your childhood.
4. DIY spa evening. A bubbly bath (or a long shower), face mask, grooming your nails, getting rid of hair in all the right places, moisturizing, and everything else that crosses your mind – do it all.
5. People-watching: Years ago, when I lived in a flat, I loved sitting at the window, sipping tea, and watching the street and the other buildings around me. I would always see something interesting and fun or catch patterns in people’s lives. No, I do not suggest you spy on people, but observing them is fun.
6. Virtual hangouts. You might lack the money to live in different cities, but virtually catching up with friends is always an option.
7. Read a fiction book. Getting lost in another fictional world is probably the one option I always go for when I’m bored in the evenings.
8. Start a podcast or a YouTube channel. Of course, if you take that decision, you will never be bored again in the evenings, and you will also stop calling it fun a few months down the road when you see the potential those two have… But it’s a good option for tonight!
9. Work on your hobby if possible.
10. Virtual museum tours – I know! This thing is for real, and you can literally lose track of time skipping from room to room and museum to museum. Here’s a good list of options to get you started.
Educate Yourself In The Evenings
1. Listen to a podcast on a subject you are interested in.
2. Watch a documentary.
3. Read educational articles or books.
4. Learn a new language.
5. Practice a musical instrument.
6. Attend a webinar.
7. Explore astronomy and charts.
8. Research your family history.
9. Learn coding or anything technology-related.
10. Explore the possibilities of AI. AI is overpowering the web, and it is crucial to learn how to understand and use it to our advantage.
11. Take care of your health and improve your sleep. Take an online test to see if you suffer from sleep apnea, or Check out CPAP supplies on sale at Intus Healthcare (sponsored link)
