How to Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

7 Tricks That Help You Get Out Of Your Comfy Bubble

If you are anything like me, you love staying in a comfortable bubble you’ve built for yourself

It’s safe.

It’s your personal space of being “fine” with everything.

It’s a lack of risks. It’s a lack of embarrassment. It’s a lack of New emotions…

However, no matter how comfortable you feel in that bubble, you don’t feel comfortable staying in it.

You know you shouldn’t.

And you are right.

But getting out of your comfort zone isn’t that simple, and the longer you snuggle into the bible, the harder it gets to leave it behind you for a while.

How to step out of your comfort zone?

What does it even mean to get out of your comfort zone?

And most importantly: Why do you need to do it?

Let me start from the very beginning.

Stepping out of your comfort zone – meaning.

Stepping out of your comfort zone happens when you perform an action step that you don’t feel completely okay with performing. It could be anything from talking in front of a big crowd to flying on a plane or talking to a stranger.

Why do you need to go out of your comfort zone?

motivational-quotes

You need to constantly challenge yourself with things that are out of your comfort zone because staying on one spot isn’t what you are built for.

Challenging yourself, getting out there, and doing something that pushes your limits makes you grow. And that growth happens on an emotional and psychological level.

It’s way too easy to stay where you are, and if you feel like doing something else is too scary, you’ve just met an “out of comfort zone” opportunity.

Life isn’t meant to be lived from the couch only. It will sooner or later provide you with challenges, and it’s up to you to overcome them.

The more you push yourself to get comfortable with what’s uncomfortable, the better your life will become

In a nutshell, getting out of your comfort zone means change, challenge, and lessons. And you need them to live a meaningful and happy life.

7 Tips to Help You Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

1. Stop mind-reading

This is such a huge thing shy people do. And if you fear new things, events, people in your life, you probably struggle with it too.

Mind-reading is when you actually believe you know what others think about you.

It happens when you enter the coffee shop, and by the time you have to order your cup of latte, you think the employee on the other end sees your greasy hair, thinks you “could’ve put a bit of makeup on that face” or can’t wait to “get rid of your presence”.

And while the last thing might be true to some extent, it still has nothing to do with you (it’s most likely due to the fact they hate working there or they have their lunch break in a minute).

Mind-reading is assuming you know people’s opinions about you. And you get it even further by caring about that opinion and acting according to it.

In reality, you have no clue (like, literally, no clue) what does on in their head and how they feel about you at that moment.

However, this “mind-reading” is a huge break on your self-confidence and stops you from doing things outside your comfort zone.

2. Self-Doubts and You

Now, this is probably why you believe you know what others think about you, and it isn’t a surprise that self-doubts are at the base of staying inside your comfort zone.

Doubting your abilities to face a situation or to handle it in a way that’s not embarrassing is such a common issue most of us face few times weekly.

Talking to a stranger or in front of a crowd (big or small) are good examples of self-doubt.

I get shy and blush when I have to talk to more than 3 people at once, even if they are my family. How weird and irrational is that?

Yet, these are things you can work with and, more importantly: you want to work with.

Self-doubt is nothing more than a feeling that you cannot be sure of because you didn’t put it to test.

Doing something, even if it scares you build the confidence you need.

The only way to approach a path on the road of your life is by making the first step.

3. Repeated Concentration on Your Past

And then there’s that!

You spend the present stuck in your past. You think and re-think it. You remember and re-remember it (is that even a word?) You breathe through the events you thought weren’t a big deal but ended up a disaster.

And that causes even more self-doubts, crushes your self-confidence, and seals the bubble even tighter around you.

Step. Out. Of. It.

Nobody asks you to forget the past. In fact, if you feel like you cheat on yourself by forgetting the past, just write it down in your journal tonight. Leave it there. Get it out of yourself. And then breathe in the new fresh air the present offers you. Lift your chin up and welcome the new day with a little bit more belief and a huge relief in your heart.

4. Will This Even Matter In a Year?

improve-yourself-quote

One of the greatest ways to measure the size of a challenge is to ask yourself if this would matter in a week, month, or year from now.

The most interesting part of the answer is that Yes, it will matter. It will matter if you did it or not because getting out of your comfort zone matters today matters even a lifetime from now.

And it’s not about the challenge you face. It’s about the idea of facing it.

5. What’s the worse that could happen?

A quick disclaimer that this question doesn’t fit into any health- or life-related situation.

But if it’s about talking to the new guy in your office, asking a girl out, speaking up in front of your boss, having an important conversation in person instead of over a text message…

What’s the worse that could happen?

The new guy would laugh at your face? The girl would say no to a date with you? Your boss will argue you back? The person you have a conversation with won’t understand your point of view?

So what?!

Go through the scenarios and work with options on how you’d react in each situation.

And then go for it.

6. Surround yourself with people who are good at stepping out of their comfort zone.

get-yourself-together

It’s easier said than done, especially nowadays. But you are more likely to be brave if you are surrounded by brave people. They will inspire you. They will push you. They will guide you.

Build your own support group of people who do things you want to do. Soak their energy and replicate their bravery.

7. Just do it.

dare-to-take-risks

I guess that’s another “easier said than done,” but do you seriously have another choice?

Change doesn’t happen unless change happens.

Just do it means this: be scared, doubt it, fear it, hate it, cry over it, stress about it… and do it anyway.

Do it fast and do it no matter what.

Conclusion on stepping out of your comfort zone

I believe that the biggest obstacle one faces in life is one himself.

I am my biggest challenge. You are yours. Going out there into the big wild world isn’t easy and social media, the internet, and family doesn’t always help.

But that isn’t a good enough reason for us to stay simmering in our bubbles. Life happens right now, and if we don’t live it fully, the only regret we will have one day would be the regret of not taking more risks, not speaking up.

It’s such a cliche, but I’d rather be disappointed in failing at something than at not approaching it in the first place.

How about you?
