20 Powerful Habits You Can Develop While Having Your Morning Coffee

Sip. Sip. Sip. Scroll. Scroll. Scroll.

If that summarises your morning routine, you are in for a treat today.

Don’t get mad at me for pointing out that scrolling on social media while having your morning coffee is a complete waste of time. There are so many other ways to start your day and turn your morning into a productive get-ready-for-an-awesome-day time.

S. J. Scott was the first to popularize the idea of habit stacking. He claims that turning an existing habit into a cue for another habit might be the key to self-improvement and personal growth.

And if you think replying to emails while attending an online conference is the definition of habit stacking, I am about to correct you once again – that’s multitasking, babe!

What EXACTLY Is Habit Stacking?

Habit stacking involves linking a new habit to an existing one, creating a sequence of behaviors that become automatic over time. This technique uses the established routine to introduce new, positive habits.

  • Habits are performed one after another;
  • Each habit gets your full attention, which means you are able to perform it mindfully;
  • By attaching new regular activities to existing established ones, you can easily turn those activities into habits.

Example 1: After brushing your teeth (an existing habit), you might immediately floss (a new habit).

Example 2: After turning on the coffee machine (an existing habit), you might immediately start preparing a healthy breakfast (a new habit).

Example 3: After going to the bathroom (an exciting habit), you might immediately drink a glass of water (a new habit).

The formula is simple: grab an existing habit and use it as a cue for a new habit you’d like to incorporate into your life.

In our case, your first sip of coffee would be your cue for whatever healthy habit you’d like to add to your morning routine.

While you might be sipping coffee, the primary focus remains on the productive habit. The coffee-drinking becomes a background activity that supports the main habit rather than competing for attention.
