Find Out What Triggers Your Memories
If you’re having difficulties focusing on the future and you find yourself overwhelmed with memories of the past it’s likely that something traumatic happened to you. In this case, you know the cause of the problem. But that doesn’t mean you’ve resolved it. You need to find out what triggers your anxiety.
By identifying your major stressors you’re already halfway through solving your issue. The goal is to develop healthy coping mechanisms. So think about what causes your anxiety. It might be lack of sleep, caffeine consumption, social media, or as simple as walking down a certain street.
Although it’s not always possible to avoid these triggers there are ways that you can manage your anxiety. So how you react to the triggers can be key to resolving them.
Keep in mind that memory triggers are unique for each person. But regardless of what they are you need to unburden them and start dealing with them. Only then you will be free of your past and you can focus on the future.
Stay Calm
I know it sounds cheesy but thinking happy thoughts could actually help you with letting go of the past. Try to focus on the positive. Think about all the good things that have been happening to you lately. It might be the small things that bring you joy.
Realize what makes you feel calm. Is it a chill night at home or dinner with your family? In any case, when your mind is calm and happy, you are more likely to think about happy occasions. The past may be hurtful but there are many things about the present that can make you happy as well.
I know it sounds too easy when in fact it might be incredibly challenging to stay calm and think happy thoughts. That’s why maybe you should consider different mindfulness exercises. The method that has been proven to have a positive impact on positivity is meditation.
A lot of people that are experiencing difficulties with letting go of the past also find it hard to meditate. And it’s true that it’s not the easiest approach. However, once you get the hang of it you’ll be surprised at how fast you’ll start appreciating the present moment.
Another thing you can start doing is yoga. This is another mindfulness method that can help you to stop thinking about the past. If you often find yourself overthinking about past events yoga can help you to feel more relaxed.
And a great way to do that is to incorporate yoga into your morning routine. Start thinking about your intentions for the day and stay on the positive side. You’ll notice a change in behavior in no time. Your days will start better and you’ll find it easier to let go of the past.
Notice Your Progress
Stopping negative thought patterns and moving forward can be difficult. But keeping track of your mental health journey is crucial. You need to notice and reflect on your progress. Letting go of negative thoughts and past memories is a process that requires time and effort. But once you’ve put in the effort you should give yourself some credit for it.
But how do you know you’re making progress? Well, if you see that your mood has changed for the better, or maybe your thinking has even shifted then it means you have made a positive change.
Another sign that you’ve made progress is if your relationships with others are getting better. Are you enjoying yourself when you’re out with your friends? Have you finally broken out of your shell and started talking about what’s bothering you? If the answer is yes then you’re definitely changing for good.
Think about how you felt before and how you do now. Acknowledge your accomplishment and realize that life’s a journey and you should never look back. What happened happened and it must stay in the past. What’s important is that you’re making progress and although it might be one step at a time you’re still moving forward.
Set Goals
You know you want to stop thinking about the past and move forwards with your life. But you need to make more specific goals. Your objectives are the stairway to heaven. And now that you’ve identified the cause of your problems you should start thinking about those steps.
So what type of goals can you set in order to free your mind from the past? For example, you can start practicing self-love and self-compassion. And what’s a great way to do so? By scheduling time for yourself, doing what makes you happy, and engaging in activities that bring you joy.
Another objective you can set is to find ways to manage your anger and confusion. You should learn how to manage your emotions and your reaction to your triggers. But more on that later.
An objective that you must have on your agenda is to learn how to set boundaries. If there’s something that makes you feel uncomfortable and will likely trigger memories you should know how to say no to it. You need to pay attention to and respect your feelings.
What’s the most important is to set goals for personal growth and healing. This will have a positive impact on your mental health in the long term. And you will eventually stop thinking about the past.
Stay Positive About the Future
Can’t stop thinking about the past? Then start thinking of the future. I know it sounds too easy but it’s the best way to block your memories. You need to have a positive attitude.
At the end of the day, you are what you reach for. Positive energy breeds positive experiences. And we attract what we feel. So even if you have no idea what the future might bring you you can attract great things just by keeping a positive attitude about it.
If you want to completely let go of the past you should start visualizing what your future will look like. And the best time to do that is in the morning. After you get up take a few minutes to intentionally daydream about what your life will look like after some time. If you want to take it a step further maybe even start writing about it in your journal.
If you want to remove any negative thoughts about the past you should focus on the future. And the future is what you make it. So stay positive about it.
Learn To Deal With Your Emotions
As we already mentioned learning to deal with your emotions is an essential part of letting go of the past. It’s completely normal to feel confused, angry, and lonely. And it’s okay to acknowledge those emotions. But it’s not okay to let them consume you.
Think about it. Are those emotions helping you overcome the past or are they dragging you down? Take a look at the impact of your emotional episodes. But also keep in mind that you’re striving for regulation, not repression.
So how can you deal with them in a healthy way? Step one is to accept them. Step two is to express them. If you ever feel like you need a shoulder to cry on open up to people you trust. And if you think that you need professional help remember that there’s nothing wrong with going to therapy.
Forgive And Forget
As Shandi once said, “Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong”. But forgiving takes effort and it’s difficult to work through it. If you find it challenging to stop thinking about the past then there’s someone you haven’t forgiven yet. This is usually the reason why it’s so hard to move on.
So who do you need to forget? Is it an ex-lover, a friend, a family member…or is it yourself? Maybe you need to forgive yourself for making a mistake. In any case, forgiveness is key to moving forward.
But how can you express forgiveness? Firstly, be honest with yourself about your anger and hurt. There has been injustice in your life that causes you pain. And it obviously has an impact on you in the long term. So acknowledge this injustice. Don’t deny it. But try to let go of it.
You must make the conscious decision to forgive. Make that choice for the better. The anger you cling to won’t do you any good. I know it takes effort to understand someone who has hurt you. But you need to find meaning and purpose in what you have been through. What’s the lesson you got out of it?
Remember that you’re a strong and capable person and whatever happened to you doesn’t define you. And it’s time to move on. It’s time to forgive and forget. Only then you can be free of hurt.
