How To Live In The Moment And Stop Worrying About The Future

Yes, this is one of those “easier said than done” things, isn’t it? Worrying about the future has spiked up in the last year or two, and things don’t seem to get any better.

Yet, life happens right here and right now, and nowadays, more than ever before, we must focus on that present moment.

Just a week or two ago, I was having one of those flash moments when I told myself, “What if today I am the happiest I will ever be?” It’s so easy to get caught in the net of constant worry for the future, contemplating over the past and forgetting that none of those actually exist at this moment.

But how do we remember to live in the moment and stop worrying about the future when overwhelmed?

Here are a few tips that will help you do that.

10 Ways To Live In The Moment and Not Worry About The Future

1. Calm your mind

Our fast-paced reality prevents us from living in the moment. We’re taught that we should act in ways that ensure a better future. And although we do have a certain amount of responsibility for the future, this type of thinking results in constant stress. This also makes us more worried and anxious.

In order to overcome that, you should calm your mind first. When your mind is calm, you’re able to see more clearly and enjoy the reality you live in instead of stressing about it. Overcoming worry might be challenging, and it takes time. But that doesn’t mean you have to get discouraged. Stay persistent and remember why you’re doing it.

A great way to calm your mind is to stop making up a bunch of possible scenarios in your head. You know that most of them are unlikely to become true anyways. Identify and eliminate confusion when you can. Try to control your emotions. And live in the present.

2. Focus on solutions instead of problems

Some people are natural problem-solvers, while others find it hard to think rationally. Many of us tend to focus on the negative. And by focusing on the problems instead of the solutions, we bring discomfort and anger into our lives.

But keep in mind that regardless of how bad your situation might seem, there’s always a solution that’s going to make it better. So instead of worrying about how it’s all going to turn out in the future, you should focus on the now and how to improve it.

A solution gives you back control over your life and lets you resolve your troubles. By looking for opportunities and directing your attention towards visualizing the ideal outcome, you’ll change your mindset for good.

3. Identify your obstacles

What’s preventing you from living in the moment?

Are you too busy to notice all the good things happening to you at the current moment? Or is there something in your past that’s preventing you from enjoying your life? Whatever the answer is, you should identify your obstacle before you try to resolve it.

Many of us are unaware of how our environment influences our thinking and behavior. While people and the media are competing for our attention, we lose a sense of reality. And usually, those are the real obstacles that prevent us from living in the moment.

So don’t let your mind wander around those distractions. Continuously make efforts into disregarding them and try to live in the moment.

4. Practice mindfulness

Life might be confusing. There’s always something coming up that we need to attend to or participate in. Our lives are so well-documented that it’s never been easier to get lost by thinking about the future. What could it be? Am I on the right track? Is what I’m doing a mistake?

This might bring a certain dose of anxiety, stress, and unhappiness. The solution? Start practicing mindfulness.

Mindfulness is a lifestyle. From the moment you wake up in the morning to the moment you fall asleep at night, you should stay mindful. So how can you do that? Incorporate mindfulness exercises into your routine.

For example, start your day with a purpose. Set your intentions for the day in a relaxing environment. Go on a morning walk, sit for a while on your balcony, or simply sit in a soft posture to find your motivation.

If you ever feel stressed during the day, hit the breaks. Take a pause and rewire your brain. It’s been proven that in our daily lives, we mostly run on autopilot. So whenever you feel that way, refresh your mind. This will create new and healthy habits, and with time you’ll notice that you start enjoying the current moment more.

Is it time you loved yourself better? See how!

5. Express gratitude

Gratitude is when you focus your attention on noticing the positive things in the world. Gratitude is a crucial part of emotional well-being, and it can’t exist without first living in the present moment. If we’re not present, we won’t notice all the things around us that we might be grateful for.

So by working on practicing gratitude, you’re actually cultivating your awareness and therefore living in the moment. And even if it seems like there’s nothing you can be grateful for, trust the process and start with any of these 100 things to be grateful for. Push yourself to appreciate every positive thing that happens to you regardless of how small it might be.

Feel the wind in your cheeks, enjoy the smell of fresh-cut grass, or the sight of a flower growing between the sidewalk squares in front of your house.

Work your way towards positivity, and gratitude will follow shortly. This is one of the best approaches towards worrying less about the future and focusing on the now because that’s what’s important in life.

6. Practice meditation

Have you ever asked yourself the question of “How to live in the moment and stop worrying?“? “How can I focus on the now”. Well, in order to become joyful, you need to start working on your inner peace. And what’s the best way to do that? Mediation.

Meditation helps you to relax and to focus on the present moment instead of worrying about the future. This practice broadens your consciousness and awareness. By focusing on the flow of your breath, you can observe your thoughts and emotions and let them pass without judgment. If you need a simple meditation guide, here’s one for you.

And what better way to start enjoying the current moment than being free of judgment? Meditation is a crucial part of emotional well being especially if you tend to worry a lot. I think we can all agree that increasing self-awareness and reducing negative emotions are key elements of letting go of the future.

7. Start journaling

I know that you’re probably sick of hearing about how journaling will change your life

I don’t know about you, but my YouTube and Instagram feeds are full of vloggers and influencers that swear by their journals. And there is a reason for that!

Journaling is incredibly helpful if you focus on the present moment and stop thinking about the future. So if that’s your goal, then you should try it. I know it sounds like too much of a commitment, but you don’t have to go big from the beginning. Start with just one morning page, and it will naturally evolve into a habit.

Your journal is a stepping block to a more mindful day. So by spearing a few minutes to journal before you start your day can really make a difference.

Here are just a few easy ways to start journaling right now:

8. Have a scheduled off-screen time

The amount of time and energy we spend on our screens every day prevents us from appreciating the moment. We’re exposed to all kinds of information every second. Regardless if it’s your work monitor or your phone, it’s likely that you spend more time looking at a screen than doing anything else.

That’s why you should strive to have as much off-screen time as you can. If you find it hard to control yourself during the day, then maybe consider scheduling it. Make it a part of your routine.

Find a hobby that doesn’t require you to type on your laptop or look at your phone. Maybe it’s that painting class you’ve always wanted to attend. Or perhaps it’s walking around the neighborhood for an hour every day. What’s important is to find that one thing that brings you joy and still keeps you away from your screen.

9. Do Yoga

One of the best ways to cultivate the present moment is to do yoga. Yoga is like meditation for the body and soul. And similar to mediation, the most important benefit of yoga is focusing on your breath. By doing that, you have no choice but to be present.

Whenever you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember that by doing yoga, you can eliminate these obstacles. I know that it’s impossible to start stretching every time you feel stressed. You can’t simply leave your work desk and start practicing. But that’s why you can incorporate it into your morning routine. That will allow you to boost your present moment and focus on awareness.

10. Focus On The Small Things

We all have those small, seemingly unimportant things that bring us joy. You’ll be surprised to find out that they’re not so unimportant. In fact, they’re vital to experiencing mindfulness and living in the moment.

Find out what they are. For me, it’s passing through my favorite bakery on my way to work and treating myself with a small pastry before I start my day. Enjoying this small thing improved my life in a big way.

But why do you think these small things are so important? Well, they’re essential because they comprise the vast majority of our lives. When you neglect the little things, you miss out on enjoying a considerable swath of your life.

Conclusion on How To Live in The Moment and Stop Worrying About The Future

Before I leave you to practice any of the tips above (or all of them), let me give you some food for thought.

Life is unpredictable and changes at a pace we can never control. We could never know what’s coming next, and in fact, that’s a good thing.

You see, there are two sides to the same coin. One side is that life is unpredictable and could always rush us into a storm we never knew existed. Yet, the other side is that … Life is unpredictable, and things can always go for the best, even better than we imagined and hoped.

And that’s the true beauty we want to appreciate. Before you go, remember, you never know which side of the coin you will get, and thinking of the worse simply takes the joy of today with no guarantees of the future. We have just this moment, and our only obligation is to experience it in every color and emotion possible.

Save this for later
