What Does It Mean To Get Your Life Together

What Does It Mean To Get Your Life Together And How Do You Know If You’ve Succeeded

“I need to get my life together!”, you said just a few days ago, but do you actually have an idea of what it means?

Are you sure? Because in this post, I intend to break your beliefs on what it means to get your life together.

“Getting life together” is one of the most important goals we, as adults, have.

Yet, we often imagine a huge checklist that simply doesn’t cover even a bit of what we actually want.

Here’s what we believe, though.

For most people, having their life together means financial, physical, and emotional stability. Good mental health, having their own home, and a job that brings good money are, of course, on top of that definition.

However…

What is wrong with most people’s idea of having their life together?

It’s the generalization and the overview of that beautiful sparkling utopia image.

Yes, you absolutely could have a well-paid job, good mental health, and be in great shape. But that in no way gets you closer to having your life together.

That perfect image we try to fit in only brings anxiety and drives our attention away from what truly matters the most. Perfection doesn’t exist, and we could only walk towards it, but we’ll never reach it.

What does it ACTUALLY mean to have your life together?

Having your life together is that personal vision of one’s dream life where they achieve their goals and have the satisfaction of where they are at that point of their existence.

It also means that even when one has daily problems and issues to face, he still stays in control of himself.

Some people are having their life together by living in a camper van in the middle of the forest. Others are doing it in suits every day while walking in high heels for 8 hours in a row.

The single mom who has found a way to bring more money home for her kids and pays the mortgage regularly has her life together.

The man who has just ended a toxic relationship and looks forward to a quiet alone-time has his life together.

We all have our lives together as long as we are at that place of self-satisfaction and self-control we were initially drawn to.

Having your life together in fact means being on top of whatever life throws at you at any point. It does not mean you have no problems, but that you are looking at them as opportunities.

In conclusion, having your life together is a perspective you are in charge of.

12 Women Who Have Their Lives Together

Inspiring women who know what getting your life together means

When I started writing this post, I got curious about how other women see the idea of having their lives together. So, I asked in a Facebook group, and 12 women shared their vision of having their lives together.

I cherish each of the ideas they share, but what I love the most about them is that “having your life together” isn’t an endless struggle and checking off one thing after another. Instead, it’s being content with who you are and making the most out of what you have. I want to share what these gorgeous women said about having their life together.

When I was first diagnosed, I had to go through all of the stages of “grief” that is completely normal after receiving such a life-altering diagnosis. But then, after about a month, something happened. I felt peace about everything. I can’t explain it. And I had no idea what it meant. But I knew deep down that breast cancer was my gift and that I was not only going to be ok, but something amazing was going to happen because of it. I not only learned about finding my own fortitude but the gift of sharing it with others.” Holly Bertone, PinkFortitude

“Really had to look inside for this one:

  • 1. Be a woman/wife God instructs me to be.
  • 2. Love and take care of myself (exercise/eat healthy etc), validating myself, and not wait for someone else’s validation.
  • 3. Pursuing my dreams/goals to leave my dead-beat 9-5.
  • 4. Keep up with our home organization but don’t be obsessed.
  • 5. Spend time with family/friends6. Have a rest day (Sabbath) every week.
  • 7. Have control over finances/investments.” Riekie

“Getting your life together to me means being at peace with you are and where you are in life. My life came together once I started Being present in the moment and not worrying about what was or what will be. We are living the good old days we will once look back on- enjoy every moment while it’s here!” Brooke Grasley, RestoreDecorAndMore

“Getting my life together is a never-ending process. The definition of “together” changes as you do. I grew up in an abusive home and getting my life together meant getting out of there and going to college. Later, with my first marriage, it meant coming to terms with the reality that I had deep wounds and low self-esteem that I needed to heal and get help doing so. Currently, it means the regular day-to-day stuff of loving myself, raising my beautiful kids, and paying off debt. For someone who spent so many years struggling with fear, anger, and severe depression this is an amazing place to be.” Marie Lengerich, CraftRocker

“To me, it means a constant working toward self-acceptance and self-love. I think working to get there tends to entail all of the more standard things people might think of such as getting in shape, eating better, not drinking or any of the other more concrete things that people come up with. When you get to true self-love you will be more likely to do those other things as part of the process. But, it is just that, a process. So there are bumps in the road, and that is OK. In fact, part of having self-love is also loving yourself when your life might not seem completely together.” Carleen Pruess Coulter, Corgilicious

“Getting your life together means finding joy in the everyday rhythm of life. You don’t have to wait till you’ve ‘made it or ‘got it all together. You can find happiness drinking a cup of coffee in a rare quiet moment or reading your kids a story at bedtime. The everyday moments are your life just as much as the big achievements.” Sarah Brooks, AussieHomeCook

“Getting your life together means keeping my schedule well organized. I love having a physical calendar to map out both my work and personal schedules. Having my schedule visible in my home for all to see keeps my life together while also keeping my family’s life on track.” Jessica Randhawa, TheForkedSpoon

“To me, getting your life together means that you’ve given thought to where you want your life to go and what you want it to look like, and every day you’re taking some kind of step in that direction. It won’t look like anyone else’s life, because it’s so personal. And it doesn’t mean that you never hit a set-back. It just means you are mindful of what you want your life to be and you’re on that trajectory. You’ve made some sacrifices and hard choices probably, but you’ve realized that your life has a purpose and you’re moving to fulfill that purpose. Mostly, I think it means to be at peace with all of the above.” Katie Mauro Landry, AHundredAffections

“To me getting my life together means doing my best at the things that are important to me. For many years I chased perfectionism. When you’re trying to be perfect your job, finances, house, or hobbies will never be good enough. Give yourself grace, and do your best each day.” Krystle Smith, BakingBeauty

“Getting my life together means finding the right balance between family, work, and self-care. To me, it’s a lifelong pursuit because life is full of changes and unexpected events.” Jennifer Kropf, HealthyHappyImpactful

Honor who you really are and don’t try to fit other people’s ideas of who/what you should be. Each person’s journey is different, and we are each given a unique purpose by God to fulfill.” Mary Harp, HealthyChristianHome

” ‘Getting your life together’ is going to mean different things to different people in each season of their life. For me right now, it meant being honest and open about my anxiety and depression. It was hard at first because I’m a stay-at-home mom, and I had this vision of it only being sunshine and homemade cookies. Through these steps, I have learned that I can be an amazing mama living with anxiety and depression and you can too! Knowing this, and accepting this about myself means I am truly ‘getting my life together.’ ” Tasha Westlund, ChaosAndCoffee
