17 Fall Self Care Ideas To Overcome Seasonal Depression

Autumn self-care ideas to keep you warm and happy

Fall is the season that gives me mixed feelings. I love the colors, the concept of coziness, and comfort. I love the smell of pumpkin, and I admire the beauty of nature.

But I hate the wind, the early sunset and the rains.

Changing the seasons has always been challenging for many people. Therefore, we all look for some autumn self-care ideas that could help us survive through fall and get to the fun part of the year – Christmas.

But with another two months of wind, rain, and gloomy days, I must admit that my fall self-care list of ideas gets longer and longer.

I’ve decided to share my self-care list with you; hopefully, it will help you feel warmer and more positive.

1. Choose the color of the season.

Fall is the season of warmth.

No matter how windy and gloomy the weather is, you know that its colors are the warmest. Choose the colors of the season. Wear an orange scarf or top, and go for a dark red purse or shoes. Get yourself a fuzzy brown blanket, cook lentils soup, and so on.

There are countless ways to invite the color of the season into your home and life. It will give you the warm feeling that you belong to this season, right here and now.

2. Have your own tea station

The colder the weather – the hotter the drinks. Fall is the season of big mugs and hot tea. Its aroma will give you the pleasant happy moment of the day you look for.

So, how about creating your tea-station? Get some mason jars and fill them with the best selection of tea for the season. I’ve got a cupboard full of tea jars, and when fall comes, it’s my favorite place to hang around. A huge tea mug helps a lot too.

3. Create time for yourself

I know you’ve heard this a lot, but the only reason every blogger writes about it is that it’s necessary to create time for yourself.

Move your chores around and shorten your to-do lists. It’s time to prepare yourself for the winter, girl. Watch romantic movies, snuggle in bed, read a book, drink wine, or choose one of these 50 self-care ideas. Whatever you do, make sure it makes you calm and peaceful, reduces stress, and energizes you.

4. Go out with friends

When it gets cold, I tend to spend more and more time indoors. Are you the same?

However, going out with friends is way more fun than staying home and feeling as gloomy as the weather outside. As much as I prefer to hug the heater and regret that the summer’s gone, I feel much better if I have coffee with a friend.

Go out with other people at least once a week this fall. It’s a great way to keep your mood in good shape.

5. Self-Care Kit

Yes, there is such a thing as a self-care kit, and it’s a fancy way to name a bunch of products that make you feel like a goddess.

There are two ways to enjoy a self-care kit – either make it at home or save yourself some time and get one from Etsy or Amazon.

6. Eat warm food.

I already mentioned lentil soup, but there are so many more fall recipes. Warm food is a must-have for the autumn. First of all, you need it because it’s… um, warm… But it’s also the best way to maintain your health during the season. Check below some selection of fall-friendly food.

7. Self-Development Season

I must admit that the best time to work on your personal growth and self-development is the autumn.

Everyone gets crazy in January and sets up hundreds of New Year resolutions, but realistically, fall is a better time to start. October and November could be your last chance to improve yourself and avoid regrets at the end of the year.

8. Start a gratitude journal

Here’s the truth.

You won’t do all of the things I suggest you do on this list.

You will probably have a few cups of tea, enjoy a warm meal, got out for a few times with friends… nothing different than what you usually do.

But I have one request only.

If you decide to do one thing from the list that you usually don’t do… choose this one.

Gratitude is the most powerful, heart-warming, and self-developing activity of all on this list.

I have practiced gratitude (on and off) for years, and the results are life-changing.

I’ve prepared for you 100 things you could be grateful for right now; I gave you advice on how to start gratitude journaling and a list of the best gratitude journals you could find online (if a normal notepad sounds boring to you).

So go on, care for yourself enough to be grateful … for everything.

9. Make someone happy

May I add, mindfully?

Making someone happy with the intention of making him happy is a perfect way to practice self-care. It’s proven that giving happiness helps you feel happier too. And that’s all we want this fall, right?

10. Save some money for the holidays

Christmas-gifts

Christmas is coming. And although we all love the lights, the trees, the holiday spirit.. we also know that Christmas = Spending money.

If you want to be able to pay your bills in January, you’ve got two options: Either start buying the Christmas gifts now or start saving money for them.

11. Aromatherapy at home

Back to the basics. Fall is the season of pumpkin, apples, and cinnamon. Treat yourself to aromatherapy. Boil an apple, cinnamon, and orange in a pan and allow the sweet aroma to spread around your home.

Alternatively, you could get yourself aroma candles and change the experience daily.

12. Try the fireplace.

I love the cracking sound of burning wood. In our house in England, we’ve got a fireplace that we use as much as we can every fall and winter. However, soon we’ll be moving to another country, and we won’t have a fireplace anymore (for now).

But if you’re lucky enough to have one, light it up. It’s not too early. Sunday afternoon is the best time to enjoy the fire in the fireplace, hug a big cup of tea, and watch a movie.

13. Stock up on hot chocolate.

If I chose one reason to love autumn, that would be hot chocolate.

I’ve got my hot chocolate mug I use only in fall and winter. I stock up on hot chocolate, marshmallows, and a cozy blanket, and I’ve got my reasons to feel happy.

14. Get the sunlight.

News Flash: The days get shorter and shorter.

In case you haven’t noticed, the days are shorter, and it won’t get any better for another two months. Back in the day, when I was working in an office, I used to go out on my lunch break for a short walk. The reason? By the time I finish work, the sun is gone, and we all need daylight.

If your job prevents you from enjoying the sun (or the lack of it), find time in your lunch break to go out. Use the weekends for outside activities with friends and family.

15. Sleep more

I knew you’d like this one.

Truth be told, shorter days mean we feel sleepy a lot more. Human beings don’t hibernate, but we have our body cycles too. And if your body tells you that it needs more sleep, listen to it.

Go to sleep earlier during the fall season or take naps during the day (if that’s possible to you). Honor your body cycle.

16. Put on your fluffy, cozy pajamas.

Yet another reason to love fall.

Fluffy pajamas are one of my top favorite things this season (although my partner won’t agree with me). They are cozy and soft, and I feel like I sleep in the clouds, wrapped in a warm blanket.

Do you have fluffy pajamas for the fall?

17. Skincare routine and all

I mentioned it a few rows above, but it deserves its own category too.

A skincare routine is your must-do in the fall. The seasons change, your body rhythm changes, and your skin suffers. Drink water and switch to more dry-skin products that will help you maintain moisturized skin.
