7 Simple Changes for a Healthier and Better Life

I want to make a change! I want to live a life where happiness, success, and a good mood are part of my daily routines.”

If you’ve ever said those words to yourself and believe 2026 is your year to approach those “changes finally”, then this is your post. Today, I want to share 7 things to change about yourself that will result in a happier, more fulfilling, and successful You.

Now, before I sat down to write this post, I asked myself what the desired outcome would be. And I realized this…

I am tired of the good old “exercise more“, “drink water”, and “wake up early” style of change. You know about them, I know about them, everybody knows about them. So, I decided to dig deeper.

Another reason to choose these 7 things to change about yourself is that they aren’t actually immediate physical changes. Unlike the “drinking more water” tips where you have to physically get up and get yourself a glass of water to make it happen, the changes you will see below are on a mindset level.

Mindset Changes Work Better and For Longer

Drinking more water is healthy, exercising daily is energizing, and waking up early is beneficial for success… But do you seriously want to do those things?

Because if you wanted, you would’ve done them by now with no need for daily motivation to pour water into a glass … Let me explain!

It is all about mindset here. Adopting the right mindset will push you to do anything you should do to support the outcome your mindset tells you to go after.

For example, if you had the mindset of a healthy person, you would go for a glass of water without even thinking about it. You wouldn’t need a reminder, just as you don’t need a reminder to watch Netflix every Friday. Your mindset and belief system dictate the natural urge to choose.

Therefore, the ideas I present to you below are mainly things you want to work on in your head – changing the mindset. Everything else will follow naturally, and you won’t even notice it.

With that said, let’s get into this post with the top 7 things you want to change about yourself to live a happy life.

1. Your Negative Self-Talk

Yep, you know what I’m talking about:

  • I am no good at anything…
  • I knew I would fail in this…
  • I knew I wouldn’t manage to do that…
  • I am so fat/ugly/lazy/unproductive…
  • Nobody likes me, and why would they?
  • I’m such a …. (insert the inappropriate word you wouldn’t use for anyone else)

Negative self-talk is one of the worst things you could do to yourself, and if you don’t change that, it doesn’t matter what else you are changing.

Here’s how I see things on my end!

“I am my best friend!”

And I think that not because some self-development guru told me to think this way, but because I truly am the only person I could rely on 100% of the time.

My parents raised me and gave me the best they could, but they live their own lives, and their values aren’t mine. And that is true for any other person in my life – friends come and go, and siblings might be annoyed by me and decide not to pick up their phones for a day or two. My husband is a wonderful man, but he has his own personality to handle… I am the only possible option I have for a lifetime relationship.

And if that’s true, I want to give myself the best and most encouraging pieces of advice. I want to support my success, my dreams, and my values.. why would I have them if I’m going to criticize them?

Negative self-talk holds you down for longer than any other criticism from outside. If you don’t believe in yourself… it doesn’t matter who else believes in you. People might encourage, support, and love you, but the real work happens within you.

2. Your Attitude Towards Gratitude

Now, this is a huge mindset shift you will thank me for just a month from now.

Here’s exactly what you need to do for the next 30 days, nothing more or less.

Every evening, just before going to bed, you want to grab a piece of paper and a pen and write a minimum of 10 things that happened on that day, and you are grateful for them. Start each sentence with the words “I am grateful for…” and don’t stop until you hit 10. If you feel you have more things to be grateful for, keep writing.

Gratitude is magic that lives inside you and awaits you to uncover it and use it. Do so.

Why am I saying that you want to change your attitude toward it, though?

Because I know you are not surprised by my claim that practicing daily gratitude improves your mindset and happiness levels. However, you are probably ignoring it. You know it, but you ignore it.

I ask you to give it a go for 30 days only. A month is enough for your life to change. People will annoy you less; your workplace will look and feel better; your boss will notice your great mood; your children will become happier because you will be happier… and more.

3. Your Self-Care and Self-Love Habits

If you feel the need to change something about your life, it means your self-love and self-care routines aren’t set in place.

I’ve said it many times before, and I won’t get bored repeating it: most of the internal and external problems, the bad choices we regret, the toxic relationships we get into… all that happens because we lack self-love.

Self-love isn’t about putting your head up and acting like the only person you care about is yourself. That’s ego.

Self-love is much more about self-respect, self-nurturing, and exploring the depths of your own soul with no criticism.

Once you’ve nailed down the self-love part on this list, everything else will inevitably follow.

How do you do it, though?

One step at a time. It requires self-awareness and honesty you’ve never truly expressed. I’ve got a full post on how to love yourself better here.

4. Your Work Ethic

I know, that’s a surprise!

Why would I involve in work for personal growth and life changes? Well, given that we spend one-third of our lives working, it is kind of normal to include it here. I think more people should work on self-care and personal development in the workplace.

What about that work ethic, though?

Work ethic is all about hard work, honesty, and giving your best regardless of the day. It is about productivity, dependability, great teamwork skills, dedication, and much more.

All I say is to work as you should, and if you roll your eyes or say you don’t get paid enough for that type of work, you’ve chosen the wrong career to build.

You see, if you’ve been on your job for more than six months and hate it, procrastinate daily, and would give a one-star review (#donotrecommend)… you are in the wrong place in life. And 2026 is the year you want to change it.

I would accept a few excuses for staying in a workplace where you hate your life and practice no work ethic. However, “I can’t find anything better” isn’t one.

5. Your Reaction Towards Conflict

As you probably know, when challenged in life, we usually have the freeze, fight, or fly reaction. That would mean that we either get shocked and freeze, not knowing what to do, get triggered and fight back with aggression, or run away from the situation.

Which one do you usually go for when challenged to enter a conflict? It is an instinct-based choice, so you might feel like you have no control over it. Which one do you wish it to be?

I know that most people would be in a freeze-or-fly situation and dream of being able to fight back. And those who fight back are the ones who’d prefer they didn’t even participate in it.

When it comes to conflict, I think none of it would be a good option. You see, all of those are actually “reactions”, and what you want to aim for is a “respond”. No, fighting back isn’t a response but a reaction.

The response is when you control everything you say or do, and that’s not the case with the “fight” type of reaction.

Being in control of yourself is what you want to aim for, and I know it’s hard, but it is a great goal to have for this year.

6. Your Relationship Status

No, I don’t encourage you to find a partner or break up with the current one. I am not even talking about the romantic relationships in your life. I am referring to any relationship you’ve got.

At the same time, when I say “change your relationship status”, I mean improving every type of relationship you have with people around you.

In my world, the best relationship status I aim for is “happy”. I want to, and I work towards having a happy relationship with the people who matter the most to me. That would mean being honest, kind, respectful, setting clear boundaries, and limiting (or even ending) toxic relationships.

Yes, I said “ending” toxic relationships, and that applies even if it’s with a person you’ve known for years.

7. Your Luck

This one is shocking, isn’t it? What do I mean by changing your luck?

Well, since this is a post on things to change about yourself in 2026, I must clarify one thing about Luvk. And this is my personal opinion as someone who’s been called “lucky” many times in my life.

Luck doesn’t exist!

There I said it!

What most people call luck is actually aligning preparation, mindset, and opportunities. I know that happy things happen when what I’ve worked and dreamt about becomes a reality. Luck has nothing to do with it.

What about the moments when something truly remarkable happens “by coincidence”? You can call that God, The Universe, or whatever higher power you believe in. But nothing is about luck.

Changing your mindset from believing you have to be “lucky” to achieve something is like handing the power over your life choices to the nothingness around you. Nothing is going to happen.

When you accept that luck doesn’t exist, you have a moment of realization and clarity you will experience exactly once in life. That is the moment when you finally feel all the power over your life in your hands.

Are you ready to let go of luck?
